About
Sentient Things, Inc. was founded in 2017 by Dr. Robert Mawrey to help organizations and individuals develop connected systems that turn raw measurements into meaningful insights. Robert’s work blends decades of engineering experience with a deep interest in coastal monitoring and environmental sensing.
An early pioneer in the field, Robert deployed the first “tweeting” tide gauge on Cape Cod in 2010, showing how real-time environmental data could be shared directly with the public. Since then, he has developed and deployed low-cost tide gauges, created a tide station website with forecasting capabilities, and earned a U.S. patent for his innovative Tilt Tide Gauge. His recent work includes applying machine learning techniques to forecast tide surges—combining tide, wind, and other environmental data to improve coastal preparedness and resilience.
Before founding Sentient Things, Robert co-founded ioBridge, creators of ThingSpeak.com, and led the development of multiple IoT products for customers. After ioBridge’s successful exit, he served as an IoT Principal at MathWorks. Earlier in his career, he was CIO and SVP at American Tower Corporation. Robert holds a Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering and lives on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
